Protektorat’s Impressive Performance Ignites Dan Skelton’s Hopes for Future Triumphs, Following Fleur de Lys Display
The nine-year-old put in a strong performance, leading for most of the race. However, he ultimately finished two and a quarter lengths behind the 8-11 favourite, L’Homme Presse. Despite the loss, the trainer expressed pride in his horse’s performance, noting that he gave 4lb to the winner. The trainer speculated that L’Homme Presse may now be considered for the Gold Cup. He believed that his horse’s run was impressive and time would prove its quality.
The victory prompted bookmakers to lower L’Homme Presse’s odds for the Cheltenham Gold Cup to 9-1 from 14. Protektorat, on the other hand, is a 33-1 longshot, but his trainer has not ruled out a rematch with L’Homme Presse. Skelton is pleased with his horse’s recent form and is considering entering him in the Denman Chase next month. He will discuss the options with the owners, and they are not afraid to race the horse more frequently.
If they decide not to face L’Homme Presse again, Protektorat could also be entered in the Ryanair Chase, where he is also priced at 33-1. He previously finished third off top weight in a handicap race at Cheltenham in December.
