Under 16-year-old Keithen Kennedy, Old Peculier achieves hat-trick victory in Dundalk

After winning a 1m4f handicap under Jack Kearney, Old Peculier was downsized in distance for the mile handicap. He won even more decisively this time, with teenage sensation Keithen Kennedy in the saddle. Kennedy, a 16-year-old apprentice from Monasterevin in County Kildare, is attached to the Jessica Harrington stable. This win marked his fourth career victory. Old Peculier justified his odds-on favoritism and coasted to a four-and-a-half length victory. Despite carrying a 7lb penalty for his previous win, the Mark Fahey-trained five-year-old made it look easy. Fahey had originally planned to send Old Peculier hurdling, but these plans may be reconsidered now. The horse’s impressive performance suggests that he may be worth a try in a decent handicap.

In his last three wins, Old Peculier was ridden by different jockeys. Shane Foley steered him to his first victory in a 1m2½f handicap last month. Promising apprentices Jack Kearney and Keithen Kennedy took over in the subsequent two wins.

In other races at the event, Horgan helped Gran Caballo, the 11-8 favorite, to win the opening 1m4f apprentice maiden. Horgan also secured a win in the first division of the 6f handicap on Havana Notion, an 11-2 shot, for trainer Johnny Feane.
