Joe Fanning Escapes Serious Injury in Wolverhampton Fall, Oisin Murphy Suspended for Nine Days for Careless Riding
After a race at Wolverhampton, jockey Joe Fanning was taken to New Cross Hospital as a precaution for scans and returned home in the early hours with his travelling manager. Fanning, the seventh winning-most jockey in British Flat racing history, stated that he was concussed and had scans which came back fine.
He expressed uncertainty about the duration of his absence from racing and mentioned the need to consult with BHA chief medical adviser Jerry Hill. A stewards’ inquiry was conducted following the race, and four incidents of interference were identified.
Sennockian was reported to have hung left off the bend and bumped Dr Foster, the mount of jockey Oisin Murphy, despite Fanning’s efforts to straighten his own mount. The contact between the two runners after the furlong marker was deemed accidental.
As a result of the inquiry, Murphy, a three-time champion jockey in Britain, will be sidelined from March 11 to 12 and from March 18 to 24.
