TDs call for Gambling Regulation Bill to be recommitted in fiery debate in Dail Eireann
The bill has been in the report stage since July 12. Final discussions were held prior to the legislation passing through the concluding stage in the Dáil before it passes through a similar process in the Seanad (upper house). One concern raised was about the potential impact on the fundraising abilities of local organizations, such as the North West Hospice and local GAA clubs.
The fear was that activities like raffles and lotteries, which are essential for these organizations, may be severely affected by the legislation. Additionally, there were concerns about the impact on major companies with prize funds exceeding half a million euros. These companies circumvent the existing legislation by offering free entry and posing a question rather than requiring a payment.
The debate also addressed the regulation of gambling advertising during specific hours, with differing viewpoints on the need for exemptions in various sectors. If the government decides to introduce new amendments to the bill, it may do so by returning the legislation to the committee stage. Only amendments that arose in the committee stage may be considered in the report stage.
