Amy Murphy Pays Heartfelt Tribute to Stefano Cherchi in Racing Post
Cherchi, a successful jockey, partnered with more than 100 winners in Britain, including ten for Murphy, before relocating to Australia last year. Tragically, he suffered a serious head injury during a race at Canberra on March 20 and passed away on April 3 at the young age of 23.
The owners’ day event was attended by over 100 guests, and a special brochure was dedicated to Cherchi. During the event, there was a parade of horses, and Murphy, visibly emotional, took to the microphone to pay tribute to the late jockey.
She thanked the staff and acknowledged the absence of their dear friend, Stefano, who had longstanding connections to the stable on Hamilton Road. Murphy described Stefano as the “life and soul of every party” and expressed how hardworking he was.
She also mentioned the team’s unity and strength during this difficult time, highlighting their resilience in coping with the loss. She shared Stefano’s preference to celebrate his life with a glass in hand rather than observe a minute’s silence.
She invited everyone to join her in raising a glass of champagne to honor Stefano’s life. Finally, Murphy announced that a remembrance mass would be held at 11am in Newmarket on April 28 at the Catholic Church of Our Lady Immaculate and Saint Etheldreda as a way to honor and remember Stefano.
