“Racing Instills Resilience, Yet Disappointing Victories for Sport’s Giants Remain” – Racing Post

Experiencing the disappointment in someone else’s face when their anticipation of a happy event is dashed can be disheartening. This feeling is familiar to me after spending 40 years around horseracing, where such letdowns are common. I have learned to tolerate the sinking feeling that comes with failed expectations.

Cybrandian, Maljimar, and What’s Up Boys are just a few examples of horses that couldn’t maintain their lead in crucial races. It’s a feeling I’ve grown accustomed to over the years. Additionally, there have been instances where I’ve observed promising ante-post prices for horses, only to see their odds shorten dramatically as the event approached. This has taught me not to count on a sure victory, as unforeseen outcomes often defy expectations.

Having experienced these letdowns over time, I have come to understand that victory is not always a foregone conclusion. It’s a lesson I’ve learned through both disappointments and missed opportunities.
