The late Dessie Hughes trained Hardy Eustace, who won consecutive Champion Hurdles in 2004 and 2005. In a memorable finish at the Cheltenham Festival, Hardy Eustace defeated old rivals Harchibald and Brave Inca. Known for his bravery and longevity, the horse won seven times at the highest level, including the 2003 Royal & SunAlliance Novices’ Hurdle.

Hardy Eustace retired at the age of 13 in 2010 and later became a star attraction at the Irish National Stud in County Kildare, where he passed away. Lar Byrne, the owner, expressed his sadness at the loss and thanked all those involved in Hardy Eustace’s life, including the Hughes family, jockeys, and the staff at the National Stud. Conor O’Dwyer, who rode Hardy Eustace to two Champion Hurdle victories, remembered the horse as a significant part of his career and appreciated the opportunity to be associated with him.

Sandra Hughes, daughter of Dessie Hughes, also shared her appreciation for Hardy Eustace and expressed gratitude to Lar Byrne and the staff at the Irish National Stud for giving the horse a wonderful retirement. Despite the sadness of his passing, Hardy Eustace will always hold a special place in their hearts.
