Paddy Woods, Arkle’s work-rider and widely loved figure in Irish racing, passes away at 93.

Paddy Woods was a renowned jockey closely associated with Tom Dreaper’s stable during the glory years of Arkle, Flyingbolt, and Fortria. He won two Irish Grand Nationals for Dreaper, rode Splash to victory in the Troytown Chase and also took the Navan showpiece on Baby Snatcher. His son, Franny, also found success as a jockey, winning two Irish Nationals.

Woods began his career in racing at Dan Moore’s stables, then spent time with Charlie Rogers before joining Dreaper’s Greenogue yard, where he played a key role in Arkle’s career. He was dedicated to his work with Arkle and shared his strong opinions on the horse’s abilities. There was often debate about whether Flyingbolt might have been Arkle’s equal or better in terms of raw ability, but Woods, who later trained horses himself, firmly believed there was no comparison.

He also had a close association with other well-known figures in the horse racing and GAA community, and was known for his effusive personality. Paddy Woods passed away and funeral details are yet to be confirmed.
