Wayne Burton praises IJF’s Oaksey House after completing London Marathon for 6.5 hours
Former jockey who was paralyzed during a fall at Exeter in 2008, Wilf Burton, completed the 26.2 mile course with the help of Oaksey House physiotherapist Scott Reed. They raised money for Spinal Research.
Burton described the marathon as physically and mentally tough but was encouraged by the amazing support from the crowds and his personal support runner, Scott. The Injured Jockeys Fund (IJF) provided significant support by facilitating his training, and Burton expressed gratitude for their assistance.
Reflecting on the marathon, Burton emphasized his determination to earn the medal, likening it to a golden nugget that held great meaning for him. Meanwhile, Lily Pearce, Richard Dunwoody’s niece, also completed the race, raising funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association after her father’s diagnosis.
She expressed gratitude for the support and encouragement from the crowd and her father’s presence at the event. Apart from Burton and Pearce, ten other runners successfully completed the marathon and collectively raised over £15,000 for Racing Welfare.
Among them were individuals from the racing industry, including assistant trainer Chris Martin and Wincanton’s clerk of the course Tom Ryall, who ran on behalf of the charity.
