Monkfish clinches Grade 2 Galmoy Hurdle for first win since 2021 Cheltenham Festival

Monkfish, trained by Willie Mullins, achieved victory in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the 2021 Cheltenham Festival, marking his first win in nearly three years. Under Paul Townend, the race started slow and Monkfish initially struggled in the deep ground. However, as others faltered, Monkfish found his stride, finishing ahead of former Supreme Novices’ winner Summerville Boy, with younger rivals Ashdale Bob and Thedevilscoachman behind. Townend expressed satisfaction with the performance and noted that Monkfish has retained his ability. Patrick Mullins, representing Willie Mullins, acknowledged the horse’s resilience in training and discussed plans for future races, possibly aiming for Cheltenham. Additionally, Monkfish won another race by a narrow margin, with jockey James O’Sullivan losing his whip near the end. An official was quoted acknowledging a misjudgment of the finish line.
